Kancho Johanes Wong was born in Indonesia. His interest
in martial arts became apparent when, at the age of 11 years, Kancho Wong
began studying Okinawa Naha te.
One year later, Kancho Wong then began his studies
in Judo, Jujitsu, and Kung-fu (Buddhist-fist Kung-fu). At the young age
of 17 years, Kancho Wong was appointed by the Indonesian Armed Forces
to train their men in "unarmed combat techniques". Over four
years, he taught and trained these techniques to their elite forces.
In 1974, Kancho Wong and his young family arrived
in Australia. Kancho Wong's first martial arts classes combined the principles
of his martial arts knowledge and Okinawa Nahate. In 1983, a university
student from Okinawa (Yoshiki) attended Kancho Wong's classes; during
this time, both discussed at length the traditions and origins of Okinawa
Nahate.
By way of introduction, Yoshiki offered
to introduce Kancho Wong to Masaaki Ikemiyagi of Okinawa Goju Ryu Meibukan,
in Okinawa and in December of 1985, Kancho Wong travelled to Okinawa for the first time to further his knowledge of Okinawa Nahate
and to meet with Masaaki Ikemiyagi. With Yoshiki as an interpreter, Kancho
Wong learnt that Okinawa Nahate was no longer a current martial arts style
at that time; Okinawa Nahate had formed two branches - Okinawa Goju Ryu
and Ueichi Ryu.

Kancho Wong revisited Okinawa in 1986.
He was given the privileged invitation to visit all and any Goju Ryu and
Uaichi Ryu dojo's in Okinawa to learn about their teachings and martial
art styles. Accompanied by Sensei Odo, Kancho Wong had the privilege to
visit the old Nahate dojo's. During-his stay, Kancho observed the merits
of each dojo he visited, participated in their training, and learnt the
basics of the Okinawan language. It became apparent to Kancho that both
Goju Ryu and Uaichi Ryu were strong martial arts styles, and that he would
need to be fluent in the Okinawan language.
Kaicho Ikemiyagi accepted Kancho Wong as his student
in Okinawa Goju Ryu. Since that beginning, Kancho Wong continued to improve
his knowledge and skill for karate, along with his fluency in the Okinawan
language. Under Kaicho Ikemigyagi's guidance, Goju Ryu Meibukan was established
in Australia.

Kancho Wong was training under the close supervision
and guidance of Dai Sensei Meitoku Yagi and he was awarded personally
to Rokyu Dan by him. He is the Chief Instructor of Okinawa Goju Ryu Meibukan
in Australia, still practices rigorously today, and travels regularly
to Okinawa to practice and hone his techniques with Kaicho Ikemiyagi.
In class, Kancho Wong is a dedicated teacher who
expects only the best from his students. He is honest in words as he is
in his deeds, earning respect and admiration for his ability to teach
karate in the traditional way. |
